This teacher training workshop in painting and sculpture is based on a program initiated by Policarpo Ribeiro for the Cultural Center in Suzano, SP, Brazil and his Journey of the Spirit Workshop.

It focuses on the use of alternative materials as a way of exercising creativity, the ability to work toward the resolution of design problems, enhancing observation and handling of diverse materials.

The use of the materials that are available but not standard to artmaking also serves to stimulate concepts of reutilization or recycling, allowing the public school students of art to approach ecological and social questions.

Sustainable TAO is an international cultural exchange program of The Arts Office Net Inc. with an emphasis on the merging of art, spirituality, and the environment. Event activities include art exhibitions, performances, workshops and symposium with artists and scholars.

Sustainability can be described as a multidimensional tapestry woven from economic, social, environmental, political and cultural aspects. Its core principle is centered on the importance of a people’s abilities to meet their present needs without compromising the prospects of future generations. In essence, it is a phenomenon that embraces a sense of responsibility towards each other while at the same time recognizing accountability for ones actions.

We find ourselves living in an age filled with incredible advances, where technology has been able to push the limits of travel, communication, medicine and science. There has come a price with this interpretation of progress. We have pushed our natural resources to their limits, rapidly exploded in size of population and a number of nations are in economic crisis. However, a collective effort to embrace a sustainable way of life has begun to take foothold across the globe.

Since the beginning of man, art has served as a mirror to the human experience. For the artist, nature has been a vehicle for inspiration as well as a means to share an individually attuned expression of Global Consciousness. For decades now, artists have had an active role in the struggle for environmental awareness. Sustainable TAO is an effort to bring together people from around the world to explore urban development, cultural diplomacy and collective action. Using the arts as a springboard for collective understanding, we can break down conceptual barriers toward achieving balance with our environment and promote the exemplary stewardship of our environment.

TAO CEO, Tonietta Walters, will be presenting a virtual exhibition in Hong Kong on June 11-14, 2009 on the subject of “Flow” or the experience of optimal performance in the Art Technology and Design installations of the Asia Consciousness Festival/Towards a Science of Consciousness Conference. She would like to include other artists in the exhibition/installation if possible.

The call is for artists that would be willing to do an art piece specifically addressing that experience we have within the artmaking process where everything just seems to comes together, the times when we manage to become fully focused on what we are working on and it seems like “the magic” happens.

What is needed.
The artwork: Can be in any media and can either be specifically about “flow” or be a piece where you feel you achieved “flow” or exemplifies your experience of flow.
Description: A short written explanations [250 words] about the piece and the flow concept from your perspective.
The usual: Name, short bio/cv, title of the work, media, size, etc.
Digital copy: Hi-res copy of the work so it can be translated to the 3D virtual environment. If 3 dimensional work, then pictures from different angles.
Your permission: Must be OK with the idea of making a virtual representation of the work for a virtual exhibition.

When it is needed.
May 1st: Notice of interest in doing the project and a representation of current work [can be the artwork itself if you already have something that exemplifies your flow experience].
May 15th: Deadline for images of 3D work [flexible according to the complexity of the piece.
May 30th: Deadline for images of 2D or digital/video/sound work

The Exhibition and beyond.
June 11-14 exhibition in Hong Kong from the Miami-Dade College Second Life Island
July 1st: Exhibition re-installed at TAO Network Gallery Space in Second Life
After July 1st: Details worked out with individual artists for the possibility of making the original artworks a part of the NoumenArts Collection of TAO:5448 Gallery in Lauderhill, FLÂ

This will be an ongoing project addressing art and consciousness to eventually include other kinds of inner experience within the artist’s creative process, other exhibitions, conferences, symposiums and publication.

January 2009 – February 2009

Flow:TriangulationÂ

Jose Polet-France, Policarpo Riberio-Brazil, Tonietta Walters-USA

Reception: February 5th, 2009 6pm to 9pm

Exhibition Statement:
Flow – a smooth uninterrupted movement or progress
Zone – a temporary state of heightened concentration that enables peak performance

‘Flow’ unlike the Merriam-Webster definition above is a now widely referenced as a concept proposed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi: a mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing, characterized by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity. The Zone usually refers to athletes. The terms seem interchangeable and most artists are intimately familiar with this state. This annual exhibition series will give artists from around the world a chance to freely interpret both concepts using their usual form of expression and give their perspective on this fundamental part of the creative process.

Curator: Tonietta A. Walters is the CEO of The Arts Office Network. A visual artist, philosopher and member of Mensa, she has a Specialized M.A. in Art and Cognitive Science from FIU. Her paintings and sculpture can be found in public and private collections in the US, Middle East and France. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Brazil, France, India, Poland and the US. Tonietta teaches Philosophy for Miami Dade Virtual College and is currently working on the correlations between her recently synthesized model of creative practice to current theories in Philosophy of Mind.
