BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward Cultural Division announces the Broward County winners of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship (SFCC) awards for Visual and Media Artists. Francie Bishop Good; Nolan Haan, Jonathan Rockford and Tonietta Walters were recently named to receive this esteemed, five-county artist fellowship award. This year’s selection is from a group of more than 300 applicants. The Broward Cultural Council will recognize the artists on October 7, 2010 at noon.
The artists are selected during a two-tier panel process which includes the participation of regional and national art experts. The regional panel included: Cheryl Brutvan, Curator of Contemporary Art, Norton Museum, Palm Beach County; Carol Damian, Director and Chief Curator, Frost Museum of Art, Miami-Dade County; Jane Hart, Curator of Exhibitions, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Broward County; Ruba Katrib, Associate Curator, MOCA, Miami-Dade County; Anthony Lauro, Deputy Director, Museum of Art | Fort Lauderdale, Broward County; Rene Morales, Assistant Curator, MAM, Miami-Dade County; and Gavin Perry, Visual Artist, Miami-Dade County, 2009 SFCC Fellowship Recipient.
The regional panel forwarded their recommendations to the national panel, which was comprised of: Luis Gispert, Visual Artist, Brooklyn, New York; Shamim Momin, Director, Los Angeles Nomadic Division, Los Angeles; and Vesela Stretenovic, PhD, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Phillips Collection, Washington, DC.
Selection by the regional panel is based solely on the quality of the artists’ work as evidenced by slides or video/films submitted. An exhibition featuring the works of the artists will be presented at the Frost Museum of Art, Florida International University in Miami, December 2010 through January 2011.
The South Florida Cultural Consortium, an alliance of the local arts agencies of Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, assists visual and media artists through cash awards solely on the basis of creative excellence to foster artistic development and encourage career advancement.
